Daytime noise is the single most reliable piece of evidence in this whole subject, and it is worth understanding why it is so dependable.
It is not a preference or a habit. It is how the animal is built.
What diurnal means
Grey squirrels are diurnal: active in daylight, at rest at night. Rats and mice are nocturnal, which is the reverse. That is not a behavioural quirk that varies with circumstances — it is built into the animal, from its eyesight to its body clock.
- Vision. Squirrels have good daylight colour vision suited to judging distance between branches. Rodents have poor eyesight and navigate by whisker, smell and memory, which works in the dark
- Predators. Squirrels avoid the nocturnal hunters by not being out at night; rodents avoid the daytime ones by the opposite strategy
- Foraging. Finding and caching food across a wide range needs light
- Body clock. The daily rhythm is internally driven, not simply a response to what is convenient
Why that makes it good evidence
Because it is not something the animal can readily change. Habits vary; biology does not. A rat in a loft may be quieter or noisier, may use different routes, may respond to disturbance — but it will not become a daytime animal, and a squirrel will not become a nocturnal one.
That is why the timing test survives everything else. It does not depend on the age of the house, the construction of the ceiling, how well insulated the loft is or how good anyone's hearing is.
The test, in one line. Heavy noise between first light and mid-morning, and again in the late afternoon, with quiet through the small hours, is a squirrel. Noise that starts as the house goes quiet in the evening and continues past midnight is not.
What still needs care
- Winter compresses it. Short days mean both peaks are closer together and later — the pattern is the same, the clock is different
- Deep insulation muffles it. Absence of loud noise is not absence of activity
- Both can be present. Noise at both ends of the day and overnight usually means two species rather than one confusing animal
- Birds are also diurnal, which is why the weight of the noise matters alongside the timing
How to use it
Note the times for two or three days — date, time, which room, what kind of noise. That short record settles the species in the great majority of cases, before anybody has been into a loft, and it costs nothing but a minute a day.

Do rats ever move about in the day?
In heavy infestations or where they are disturbed, occasionally. The main pattern remains nocturnal.
