Why Do Squirrels Keep Returning to Some Thetford Roofs?

It is not the same squirrel - why recurrence is an annual cycle rather than a persistent individual.

People describe this as the squirrel coming back, and the framing matters more than it sounds.

In most Thetford cases it is not the same animal at all, and once that is clear, both the explanation and the answer change.

Why it is usually a different animal

Grey squirrels do not live long in the wild. A large proportion of young do not survive their first year, and an adult's life expectancy is measured in a small number of years rather than many. Meanwhile a fresh cohort disperses every autumn, and another after the spring litter.

So a roof that is entered in three consecutive autumns has almost certainly been entered by three different animals. What is constant is not the individual; it is the property and the annual pressure.

How the timing gives it away

  • Days after previous work — the same animal, or a second opening on the same roof
  • A few weeks after — frequently another animal from the same local population finding the same route
  • The following autumn — almost certainly a new animal, and almost certainly a young one from that year's dispersal
  • Every autumn, at about the same time — the property is simply on the list, and the openings are still open

Why this framing helps. A persistent individual sounds like something that has to be outwitted. An annual cycle is a maintenance problem — and maintenance problems have straightforward answers.

What makes a property a repeat destination

Nothing about the household, and everything about the fabric and the surroundings. An opening that is still there. A route to the roof that has not changed. Mature trees nearby. Being near the edge of good habitat — which, with the forest close by, applies to a great deal of Thetford.

There is one further factor: a site that has been used holds scent, and that makes it more legible to the next animal along. Clearing nesting material after the work is part of removing the property from the shortlist.

What actually breaks the cycle

  1. Close the openings properly, in steel, mechanically fixed — proofing at £180
  2. Clear the nesting material rather than leaving it in place
  3. Cut the approach where it can be cut
  4. Look along the roof line each September, for ten minutes, from the ground

None of that is aimed at an individual animal, which is the point. It is aimed at the building, and the building is the only part of the arrangement that stays the same from year to year.

Questions

So the squirrel is not holding a grudge?

No. It is almost certainly a different animal each season, working from the same set of opportunities.

Does that mean it will always happen?

Only while the openings are open. A closed roof is not a candidate, however many animals pass it.

Why does it happen at the same time each year?

Because dispersal is seasonal. The same wave of young animals moves through every autumn.
